Stephen King, the principal of the practice, was born and raised in Toronto. He developed a strong interest in visual arts and music alongside studies in math and science that led to attending the University of Toronto’s Department of Architecture. University influences included George Baird, George Robb, Daniel Libeskind, Peter Prangnell, Blanche van Ginkel, Klaus Dunker, Terry Montgomery, Bruce Kuwabara, David Sisam, Jeff Stinson, Carmen Corneil, Philip Carter, William Grierson, Thomas Howarth, Douglas Lee, Paul Sandori, Michael Kirkland and James Acland. For his fifth year thesis Stephen prepared a proposal for a new Opera House in downtown Toronto.
While at the University, Stephen also completed studies in music history, theory and jazz performance under the direction of David Elliot and Phil Nimmons.
Following graduation with a Bachelor of Architecture, Stephen worked at various Toronto architectural firms gaining a full range of experience in practice from design through to the approval process, tendering and construction phases. Project types included new schools, housing projects, custom homes, industrial complexes, restaurants, mixed-used projects, medical facilities, heritage restorations and renovations.
Stephen has also completed studies in Home Inspections (offered by Inspection Training Associates including the training staff of Carson Dunlop Home Inspectors) and offers services in that area. As it is for all licensed architects in Ontario, required continuing education is a part of maintaining an architectural practice. Stephen successfully completed the OAA courses in Building Code Designation in the areas of House, Small Buildings, Large Buildings and Complex Buildings.
Teamwork includes the collaboration with various engineering consultants, contractors, tradespeople and suppliers to produce the finished built project.
Stephen lives in the Beaches area of Toronto with his wife Carol where they have raised their three children.
